Dyne Medical Group Showcases AI Powered Endoscope For The Global Market

Dyne Medical Group (henceforth DMG) announced that it’s developing an AI powered endoscope to automate lesion detection. The aim is to improve efficiency, and eventually supply this solution globally.

Modern medicine has made remarkable progress as of late. Despite this, cancer rates continue to rise year over year, as people across the world live longer and longer. Early detection is key in many cancer scenarios, and endoscopies play a crucial role in that process.

Unfortunately, the market for endoscopes are controlled by a few manufacturers, leading to a premium pricing strategy. This means smaller medical centers and hospitals often can’t implement endoscopes, and thus create a gap in the system where patients are diagnosed too late, missing that ‘golden time’. This is even more of a problem in countries where medical infrastructure has yet to form.

DMG plans to upend the market, and take advantage of this gap in the market. The company is developing an AI powered endoscope that’s 70% cheaper than the competition. The company claims that through years of R&D, the company has managed to match its competition in key areas, while reducing complexity and redundancies to bring costs to levels never thought possible.

DMG’s AI powered endoscope aims to augment an endoscope’s core capabilities. For example, it has a real-time detection feature which allows medical professionals to identify suspicious tumors during an endoscopy. It does this by comparing the video feed against a video database gathered from the endoscopies of other cancer patients. It then uses this data to statistically model a patient’s outcomes. This is expected to be a great supplementary tool for doctors to have at their disposal.

DMG is expecting its AI endoscope to clear regulatory hurdles by 2023, after which it hopes to partner with global medical devices firms to expand its market reach. To this end, the company has received numerous investments from various VCs in South Korea.

Sunghoon Lee, CEO of DMG stated that “DMG will lead the world in shaping the future of AI endoscopes by the year 2025” further stating that “since COVID, the medical world has shifted to one of prevention” and that he’s “certain that DMG will be able to shape the market via a comprehensive endoscopic solution.”

He also added that, “We’re ready to build out a paradigm shift through cutting edge tech, big data, and a seamless platform interface.”

DMG’s team is made of the former ranks of Google, J&J, P&G, and Samsung, among others, with vast experience in corporate strategy, development, and execution. Its product development is being led by a team with over 15 years experience in precision design, and is supported further by an expert team of AI engineers.

The company officially initiated a change in their corporate name, from Dyne Group Inc to Dyne Medical Group Inc, on August 31st of this year with shareholder approval. The decision is in line with the company's greater strategic goal of growing into a global player in the medical devices industry.

다인메디컬그룹(대표 이성훈)이 인공지능(AI) 기반의 자동 병변 탐지 기능을 탑재한 내시경 시스템 개발에 박차를 가하고 있다. 해당 시스템의 기술 경쟁력과 효율성을 바탕으로 해외 시장까지 진출한다는 목표다.

 의료 기술이 발전하고 있는 현대 사회에서도 고령화와 더불어 암 발병률은 지속적으로 증가하고 있다. 암의 조기 발견은 암 환자의 치료와 회복에 매우 중요한 요소로 자리하며, 조기 발견은 주로 내시경을 통해 진단이 가능하다.

 그러나 국내외 내시경 의료기기 시장은 소수의 제조사들에 의해 고가 가격 정책으로 형성되어 있다. 이러한 시장 현황은 소규모 병·의원들의 부담이 될 뿐만 아니라, 미흡한 의료 장비 구축으로 의료 공백이 발생하여 환자들 또한 조기 진단을 통해 치료할 수 있는 ‘골든타임’을 놓치게 되는 문제로도 이어질 수 있다. 특히 이와 같은 상황은 의료 선진국으로 유명한 우리나라보다도 의료 환경이 열악한 개발도상국에서 더욱 심각하다.

 이에 다인메디컬은 기존 내시경의 초고가 대비 약 70% 저렴한 수준으로 AI 기반 내시경 시스템을 개발하여, 개발도상국부터 시작하여 전 세계 의료 확장을 위해 노력한다는 계획이다. 다인메디컬은 수년간 연구 개발 끝에 기존 내시경 장비에서 진단 및 치료에 필수적인 핵심 기능은 완전히 갖추면서 복잡한 제품 구조와 부품을 최소화하여 제품 생산에 드는 비용을 혁신적으로 감소시켰다.

 다인메디컬의 AI 기반 내시경 시스템은 내시경의 핵심 기능은 남기고 AI 진단기술을 더했다. 이를 통해 내시경 시술 시에 의심되는 조기 암 질환에 대한 동시다발 병변 탐지(real-time detection)기능을 탑재했다. 기존 암 환자들의 내시경 진단 자료 데이터베이스를 바탕으로 내시경 영상을 AI 기술로 분석, 조기암의 발전 방향성 및 가능성 등에 대한 보조적 통계자료를 제시한다. 이는 내시경자료를 통해 진단하는 전문의에게도 매우 의미 있는 보조자료가 될 것으로 기대되고 있다.

 다인메디컬은 AI 내시경 시스템을 다가오는 2023년에 의료기기 인허가를 획득하여 선보일 계획이다. 이후 글로벌 의료기기 유통사와 파트너십을 체결하여 글로벌 사업 확장을 진행할 예정이다. 이를 위해 다인메디컬은 현재 국내에서 유수의 기관으로부터 투자를 받아서 개발 및 의료기기 인허가 작업에 박차를 가하고 있다.
